Confessions of a Terrible Soccer Player

I suppose the title of this post totally gives away what I’m going to talk about today. Background story to my rant: a few of my friends used to play together on a baseball team. The organizers eventually moved on and left the team to be headed up by a couple friends (Daniel, Rob, Daniel) and they realized that nobody likes baseball (that’s right, I said it!).

They started a soccer team and I totally got on board with that. We joined a GTA league where I learned to pretend to play right midfield, and where we proceeded to lose every game. That’s right, I lost the game. At first, I had a really good attitude about it, but then after a while it just got brutal… I even flipped out and got a yellow card in one of the games. The team had no chemistry, which I’m coming to understand is the most important aspect of the game.

I was sure it wasn’t “just me” and that our team was just brutal and disorganized. So the second half of our last game got rained out and postponed by a week, and unfortunately I couldn’t make it. My team won. Suddenly, maybe it’s me.

A month later I’ve signed up for fall soccer… indoor soccer at my local indoor field. It’s a great facility and the caliber of the players on the field is much higher, and it’s a completely different team of guys who have played their whole lives (except for me).

This is the point of my article today: We’re 7 games into the indoor season and we’re 0-7.

I’ve found out it’s not just me, and it’s not an issue of skill, because we have 5 or more “superstar” awesome players who can run circles around others on the field… it’s a disconnect between getting the ball to their side and making the goals.

What gives a soccer team chemistry? How can I work on ball control outside of the game (when it’s getting to be a nice generic Canada cold outside)?

Come on soccer people… tell me what to do!!! rob@robscooking.com

Next season I’m playing in a lower division…. seriously, having not won a single match after playing soccer for 7 months now I’m getting really frustrated and depressed
